Ground Is Broken on Japan's Ghibli Park, Coming in 2022

The groundbreaking ceremony for Ghibli Park

Starting in 2022, you'll be able to explore the worlds of Studio Ghibli at a new theme park!

Construction has begun on Ghibli Park, an attraction that will recreate the worlds of five classic Hayao Miyazaki movies.The $323 million project is being built on the site of the 2005 World Expo in Aichi Prefecture, and plans to bring in around 1.8 million visitors per year.

Aichi Gov. Hideaki Omura spoke at the ceremony, where concept art for the park was revealed.The theme park will include five regions, recreating the settings of films like My Neighbor Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, and Spirited Away.In fact, one attraction is already in place: Satsuki and Mei's house from My Neighbor Totoro, which was constructed for the 2005 World Expo and will remain in the park.

Three of the park's areas are expected to be open to the public by late 2022, with the final two opening in March 2024. In the meantime, you can immerse yourself in the gentle fantasy of Studio Ghibli's films with virtual tours of Mitaka's Ghibli Museum.
