Sailor Moon Anime Goes Retro With Creditless Cosmos Film Opening

Sailor Moon Cosmos

For anime fans over a certain age, the original Sailor Moon anime opening (both the English or Japanese versions) is etched into our hearts and minds. For the release of the first Sailor Moon Cosmos anime film, the official YouTube account released an updated version of the “Moonlight Densetsu (Moonlight Legend)” in the new animation style and with all the latest characters.

The video not only serves as a homage to the original (and beloved!) 1992 opening but is also the opening title for the first Sailor Moon Cosmos anime film, which is currently playing in theaters across Japan.

What’s more, the third-week theatrical gift for the first Sailor Moon Cosmos anime film was also announced. Starting June 23, four coasters featuring illustrations drawn by character designer Kazuko Tadano will be given out randomly to those who see the film in Japan.

Sailor Moon Cosmos is adapting the "final battle" from the original manga series by Naoko Takeuchi, which was previously adapted as the last arc of the original Sailor Moon anime dubbed "Sailor Moon Sailor Stars." Cosmos' first film was released on June 9, while the second part enters theaters on June 30.

Cosmos continues from the Sailor Moon Eternal two-part film, released in early 2021 in Japan and worldwide on Netflix on June 3, 2021. Eternal continued the Sailor Moon Crystal TV anime series, which is streaming here on Crunchyroll, who describes the series:

Based on Naoko Takeuchi’s legendary manga series, Sailor Moon Crystal retells the story of Sailor Moon as she searches for her fellow Sailor Guardians and the Legendary Silver Crystal to stop the dark forces of Queen Beryl.
