The 32nd Tokyo International Film Festival is heading to various venues in Minato Ward, Tokyo, Japan in late October and early November of 2019, and this year they've got a special programming track with a killer lineup dedicated to the history of anime and visual effects TV shows entitled "The Evolution of Japanese Animation / VFX ". Screenings include:
The White Snake Enchantress (1958), directed by Taiji Yabushita, also known as "Panda and the Magic Serpent".
Aim for the Best, Theatrical Version (1979), directed by Osamu Dezaki, also known as "Aim for the Ace".
AKIRA (1988), directed by Katsuhiro Otomo.
Children of the sea (2019), directed by Ayumu Watanabe.
Ride Your Wave (2019), directed by Masaaki Yuasa.
Weathering With You (2019), directed by Makoto Shinkai.
Promare (2019), directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi.
And Okko's Inn (2018), directed by Kitaro Kosaka.
The "The Evolution of Japanese Animation / VFX" also includes 4K restored screenings of four episodes of the 1966 tokusatsu TV series, Ultra Q: "Challenge from the Year 2020", "Garamon Strikes Back", "Tokyo Ice Age", and "Kanegon's Cocoon". The screenings also include premium talk segments with special guests, and there is also another talk event entitled "The Birth of Ultra Monsters-From Ultra Q to Ultraman ".
