Anime body pillows, or dakimakuras, are very popular items of merchandise in the anime community. Who does n’t love something huggable? Being very popular in Japan means it ’s big business for anime companies who do n’t particularly like having their characters stolen to make someone else money – especially using naked versions of very popular, and very wholesome, characters, like the girls from Love Live! Sunshine !!
On September 12, the Ibaraki Prefectural Police arrested a 50-year-old man who works in Chiba Prefecture for violating the Copyright Act. The Copyright Act in Japan lets authors control the economic rights of adaptation and how that adaptation is monetized. doujinshi (fan manga) events can thrive, with artists usually only making back what they paid for materials.
The 50-year-old man, on the other hand, made a reported 3 million yen (US $ 28,000) over a 3 year period selling these anime body pillows online. The Ibaraki Prefectural Police claim the man sold a nude body pillow on May 2 on an online auction website containing nude characters from Love Live! Sunshine !!, violating the copyright of anime studio Sunrise, who created the series.
While the man denies the charges, the investigators are likely using him to get to his supplier, as they believe the man did n’t create the pillow covers himself.
Next time, he should watch out when lewding the Love Live ’s!
