Upcoming Netflix anime Japan Sinks 2020, from director Masaaki Yuasa and his team at anime studio Science SARU, released a new visual on April 16, showcasing a crumbled Shibuya in a worn-out photo from the lead characters against a clear blue sky and ocean.

Japan Sinks 2020 is an updated adaptation of Sakyo Komatsu's 1973 bestselling sci-fi novel Japan Sinks, which has seen multiple adaptations in the past.The 10-episode anime series will be set right after the in-universe 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics where disaster strikes Japan.

Masaaki Yuasa has stated that work on Japan Sinks 2020 is already completed, and though he has stepped down from his role at Science SARU, he'll still be finishing the projects already announced at the studio. Japan Sinks 2020 will stream on Netflix in Summer 2020 after its premiere at the online-based 2020 Annecy International Animated Film Festival from June 15 to June 30.
